Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Do I need to do a CELTA before a Delta?
A. Delta is an in-service qualification and is only suitable for teachers with at least one year of post-CELTA (or equivalent) classroom experience. That year should include varied teaching: different levels, age groups, and ideally more than one context. Many teachers wait three to four years after CELTA before starting Delta. If you have never taken CELTA (or an equivalent qualification), we strongly recommend doing that first.
Q. Why should I do a Delta?
A. Teachers take Delta to deepen their professional knowledge and skills, to explore the theory behind classroom practice, and to prepare for more senior roles such as teacher trainer or director of studies. It is widely recognised as the next step after CELTA.
Q. Can I take the Delta modules in any order?
A. Yes. Cambridge has no rules about order: you can take Modules 1, 2, and 3 in whichever sequence suits you. You receive a certificate after each module, and once you have completed all three you receive the overarching Delta certificate. We recommend starting with Module 1, as its theoretical foundation is useful for success in Modules 2 and 3.
Q. Can I take all three modules at the same time?
A. In theory, yes. All our modules are online and part-time, so it’s possible to study them simultaneously. However, Delta is intensive. Module 1 requires significant exam preparation; Module 2 involves teaching practice, observation, and extensive reading; Module 3 is research-based and often takes longer than expected. If you are working or have other responsibilities, we advise caution. We would discuss your workload carefully at interview before agreeing to simultaneous enrolment.
Q. Do I need to take all three modules with the same centre?
A. No. You can complete different modules at different centres if you prefer. Once you have three certificates, regardless of where you studied, Cambridge issues the overarching Delta certificate.
Q. Why is Module 2 more expensive than Modules 1 and 3?
A. Module 2 is the practical teaching component. It includes observed lessons, extensive marking and feedback from tutors, and far more contact hours. For this reason, the fees are higher than for Modules 1 (exam-based) and 3 (extended assignment).
Q. Why don’t you publish fixed dates for Module 3 courses?
A. Module 3 is an individual research project, so each candidate requires tailored support and guidance. There are no fixed course dates, but you must submit your final assignment in June or December (the two annual Cambridge submission points). We help you plan backwards from your chosen submission date.
Q. Do you offer Delta face-to-face?
No. At present, we offer Delta entirely online.
Q. Do I need to live in the UK to take your Delta?
No. Our courses are online and open worldwide. You do, however, need a reliable internet connection. For Module 1, we arrange the written exam in Birmingham, UK, but you can also sit the exam at any authorised Cambridge centre worldwide. We will help you find a suitable centre if you are outside the UK.
