If you’re deciding where to take your CELTA course in the UK, Birmingham and Manchester are two strong options. Both offer the same qualification, the same standards, and the same assessment. What differs is the day-to-day experience: the feel of the centre, the surrounding city, and the kind of environment you’ll spend four intensive weeks in.

So how do you choose?

Course Structure

From a training perspective, there is no difference. Both Birmingham and Manchester offer:

  • Full-time intensive CELTA courses

  • Part-time formats

  • The same assessment criteria

  • The same qualification from Cambridge

You will be observed, assessed, and supported in exactly the same way in both locations. Your certificate will carry the same weight internationally. That means your decision is really about where you want to spend your time.

The Training Centres

Both centres are based in large, professional language schools in central locations, but they feel slightly different when you walk in.

Birmingham

The Birmingham centre is right next to New Street Station, in the heart of the city’s main shopping district. You’re a one-minute walk from the Bullring and Grand Central, surrounded by shops, cafés, and everything you might need during an intensive course.

Inside, the school is spacious and bright. Classrooms are large, with plenty of room to work and move around, and the overall feel is clean, open, and well-organised. There are multiple areas where trainees can sit, prepare lessons, or take a break between sessions. Facilities are strong, including dedicated spaces for eating and relaxing during the day.

Manchester

The Manchester centre is just as central, located near Piccadilly and within easy walking distance of major transport links. The immediate area has a slightly different feel: more cafés, bars, and social spaces, alongside the usual city-centre amenities. The school itself has a more compact layout, with classrooms arranged around a shared social area. This creates a lively, connected atmosphere, with English language students from different countries mixing, talking, and taking part in activities throughout the day. When you walk in, there’s a clear sense of energy and interaction.

The Trainee Experience

In both locations, you can expect a mix of backgrounds and nationalities. Some trainees are UK-based, while others relocate for the course. Both cities are well connected by rail, and both centres are easy to reach from their main stations, which makes commuting possible for many candidates.

Cohort sizes are similar overall, though Manchester courses may initially run with slightly smaller groups. For some trainees, that can mean a more intimate training experience, while Birmingham often offers a slightly larger, more varied cohort.

In practice, both centres provide:

  • Close tutor support

  • A collaborative group environment

  • A balance of input sessions and teaching practice

Teaching Practice

In both Birmingham and Manchester, training groups are similar, but there can be a difference in the profile of the English language students you’ll teach.

In Birmingham, many learners come from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds, including students from countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Sudan. This often creates a strong sense of purpose in the classroom, with trainees working with highly motivated learners who have immediate, real-world reasons for improving their English.

In Manchester, you’re more likely to encounter a broader mix of international students, including European and Latin American learners alongside others. This can give you experience with a wider range of learner expectations and language-learning goals.

Both contexts are valuable, and both prepare you effectively for teaching in different environments.

Location and Lifestyle

Both cities are large, diverse, and more affordable than London. You can expect similar overall living costs, with accommodation prices varying depending on area and availability. If needed, homestay accommodation can be arranged in both locations.

The difference is more about atmosphere than cost.

Manchester has a reputation for being energetic and outward-facing. There’s a strong sense of movement in the city, with a busy cultural scene, a visible international profile, and plenty happening in the evenings if you want to explore after class.

Birmingham offers a highly practical, well-connected base. Its central location within the UK makes travel easy in all directions, and the immediate area around the centre is extremely convenient for day-to-day life during the course.

Both cities are diverse and multicultural, and both offer plenty to do outside the classroom. Your experience will depend less on the city itself and more on how you choose to spend your time during the course.

Who Might Prefer Manchester?

Manchester may suit:

  • Candidates who like a lively, social city environment

  • Those drawn to a strong international feel

  • Trainees who prefer a more intimate, connected school setting

Who Might Prefer Birmingham?

Birmingham may suit:

  • Candidates who value convenience and central transport links

  • Those commuting from elsewhere in the UK

  • Trainees who prefer larger, more open training spaces

The Qualification Is the Same

Whichever location you choose, you will complete the same CELTA course and receive the same qualification from Cambridge. Employers do not distinguish between locations. What matters is that you complete the course successfully and gain the practical teaching experience that comes with it.

Final Thought

If you’re still unsure, it’s worth asking yourself a simple question: where do you feel more comfortable spending an intensive month of training? For some people, that’s a slightly quieter, more spacious environment. For others, it’s a more compact, social setting with a sense of activity and energy.

There isn’t a right answer. Both Birmingham and Manchester will give you a high-quality CELTA experience. The best choice is the one that fits your lifestyle and preferences.
