Brighton has long been one of the UK’s most recognisable English language teaching centres. This guide explains who the Brighton course tends to suit, what the training environment is like, who you will work with, and how Brighton compares to our other UK locations.
Who Does the Brighton CELTA Suit?
Brighton typically attracts:
Recent graduates qualifying before teaching abroad
International candidates already studying English in the UK
Trainees travelling from overseas specifically for the course
Career-changers looking for an intensive, focused qualification
Candidates who prefer a smaller coastal city rather than a major metropolitan centre
People drawn to a creative, independent, slightly alternative city atmosphere
Brighton has a strong arts, theatre and music culture. It is known for being open, diverse and culturally active. If you like the idea of studying in a seaside city with a distinctive personality, Brighton may suit you.
At the same time, cohorts are broad in age and background. We regularly see a mix of British trainees, long-term UK residents and fully international candidates. The overall profile is varied rather than narrow.
The Training Venue: Learning in a Victorian Mansion by the Sea
Our Brighton CELTA courses are delivered at ELC Brighton, an established highly-ranked British Council-accredited language school housed in a large Victorian building very close to the seafront.
Many of the classrooms used for CELTA have views towards the sea. The building includes high ceilings, period features and grand staircases alongside more modern additions. It is not a corporate training centre; it feels like studying in a historic English building rather than a modern office block.
For some trainees, that atmosphere is part of the appeal: high ceilings, natural light, and a coastal setting within walking distance of Brighton’s centre and promenade.
Who Will Train You?
Our Brighton CELTA team is led by Jane and Anna.
Jane has been involved in English language teaching for around four decades. She has taught internationally, and works not only as a CELTA tutor but also as a CELTA assessor and Delta tutor and assessor. Anna has extensive teaching experience in Brighton, online and abroad. She is known for her clear feedback, practical guidance and supportive approach to trainee development.
Both tutors are known within our centres for being warm, approachable and highly attentive to individual progress. With Jane and Anna, the tone of the course is professional but personable.
What Is Teaching Practice Like in Brighton?
Teaching practice is central to the CELTA.
In Brighton, you teach real adult learners of English in small groups. Teaching practice classes are typically at pre-intermediate and upper-intermediate levels. Learners often include:
Western European students such as Italians, French and Swiss
Students from Japan and South Korea studying at the school
Members of the Ukrainian refugee community
You will teach general English lessons, plan carefully structured stages, and receive detailed oral and written feedback after every session.
The structure ensures:
Regular, sustained teaching time
Close observation and targeted development points
Clear, incremental progress over the course
Because class sizes are manageable, feedback tends to be specific and individual rather than generic.
Course Formats
In Brighton, we offer:
Full-time CELTA in the intensive four-week format
Part-time CELTA spread over a longer period
Both formats lead to the same Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages awarded by Cambridge. The qualification is identical regardless of location or study mode.
The choice between full-time and part-time is about your availability and workload capacity and not status or recognition.
Practical Considerations
Cost of Living
Brighton is generally less expensive than central London but more expensive than many inland regional cities. It is a popular coastal city, so accommodation planning should be done early.
Location and Travel
Brighton is compact and walkable. It is also easily accessible from Gatwick Airport, with direct trains taking under 30 minutes, and well connected to London by rail. This makes it a practical option for both UK-based and international trainees.
Time Commitment
Full-time CELTA is intensive and demanding. Part-time study offers more flexibility but still requires sustained weekly engagement. Regardless of format, you should expect a significant workload.
Brighton Compared to Other DC Locations
Each centre has a different character.
London offers capital-city scale and proximity to a large job market.
Manchester and Birmingham provide larger inland cities with generally lower living costs and a more modern training environment.
Cork, Eastbourne and Bournemouth offer smaller coastal settings.
Online CELTA provides flexibility for those unable to relocate.
Brighton combines a seaside location with a long-established ELT reputation and a culturally distinctive city atmosphere.
If Manchester represents one kind of urban cool, Brighton represents another: coastal, creative and independent. If you like the idea of training near the sea in a historic building within a city known for arts and diversity, Brighton is likely to feel like a good match.
