If you’re thinking about becoming an English language teacher, you might ask yourself: what is it really like to take the CELTA in Eastbourne? The CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, awarded by Cambridge University Press & Assessment) is widely recognised as the gold standard entry qualification for teaching English, and Eastbourne offers a unique setting in which to study it.
Why Choose CELTA in Eastbourne?
Eastbourne is home to the only CELTA centre on the south coast of England east of Brighton, making it the natural choice for anyone in East Sussex looking for a face-to-face option. Whether you’re based in Hastings, Bexhill, Lewes, or further along the south coast, Eastbourne is the most accessible centre for your training.
The course is delivered at ELC Eastbourne, a school with deep roots in the town’s history. Founded in 1936 and housed since 1947 in Graham House, the building is a striking mix of old and new: a beautiful period property with sunny gardens, comfortable breakout areas, and high-ceilinged student relaxation and study areas, but also modern facilities like interactive whiteboards and bright classrooms. Because the CELTA runs in the evenings and on weekends, you’ll often have this historic space to yourself, giving you a calm and focused environment to study in.
Experienced and Supportive Trainers
One of the real strengths of the CELTA in Eastbourne is the teaching team. Our trainers, Simon, Bahar, and Ellie, are experienced, supportive professionals who have guided hundreds of new teachers through the course. Their feedback, mentoring, and practical advice will help you grow from your very first lesson through to the final week of the course.
A Typical Week on the CELTA in Eastbourne
The Eastbourne CELTA is a part-time, face-to-face course running once a year each September. The timetable is designed to balance intensive training with time to reflect and prepare.
Saturdays (10.00–13.45): Input sessions and workshops on teaching techniques, methods, and lesson frameworks, led by your tutors.
Monday & Wednesday evenings (6:00 pm - 9:30 pm): Teaching practice with real adult learners from the local community, plus guided lesson planning and expert tutor feedback.
Over 12 weeks, you’ll gain hands-on experience, teaching classes of volunteer students from around Eastbourne, people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to your lessons.
If this schedule doesn’t work for you, there are also monthly online CELTA courses with DC Teacher Training, open to anyone in East Sussex and beyond.
Eastbourne and the Local Context
Eastbourne itself is a welcoming seaside town, well known for its pier, seafront, and proximity to the South Downs. For decades, East Sussex towns like Eastbourne, Hastings, and Brighton have long hosted language learners from around the world, which means there are often opportunities for newly qualified teachers locally.
Studying here also means being part of a long tradition: international students have been coming to coastal towns such as Hastings, Bexhill, Lewes, and Eastbourne for more than a century. Completing your CELTA in Eastbourne connects you to this rich history of English language teaching on the south coast.
