What is the Cambridge Delta? A Guide for English Language Teachers

If you’ve been teaching English for a while, chances are you’ve already heard of the Cambridge Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). But what exactly is it? How does it compare to the CELTA? And what can it do for your career?

In this post, we’ll give a clear overview of Delta, explain how the three modules work, and show you why it could be the next step in your professional journey.

What is the Cambridge Delta?

Delta is an advanced, internationally recognised qualification for experienced English language teachers. It is awarded by Cambridge Assessment and is considered the natural progression after the CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

While CELTA equips teachers with the essential tools to begin their careers, Delta is designed for those who already have classroom experience and are ready to deepen their expertise, explore new specialisms, or move into senior academic roles.

How is Delta structured?

The Delta is divided into three independent modules. You can take them separately, in any order, and at different centres if you wish. Once you complete all three, Cambridge issues the overarching Delta certificate.

  • Module 1: Understanding language, methodology and resources for teaching.

    • Assessed via written exam (twice yearly).

  • Module 2: Developing professional practice.

    • Assessed via observed teaching practice, lesson plans, self-evaluations and a professional development assignment.

  • Module 3: Extending practice and focusing on specialist areas.

    • Based on a 4,000–4,500-word written assignment.

At DC Teacher Training, we deliver all three modules online, with live tutor support, clear course structures, and flexible start dates.

Why should I take Delta?

Teachers choose Delta for many reasons:

  • To develop advanced teaching skills beyond the CELTA foundation.

  • To gain an internationally respected qualification that opens career doors.

  • To prepare for roles such as teacher trainer, academic manager, or director of studies.

  • To specialise in areas such as Business English, CLIL, or exam preparation.

In short: if CELTA launched your career, Delta helps you professionalise and progress.

Is Delta online?

Yes. With us, Delta is offered entirely online and part-time. That means you can fit study around your teaching schedule and complete the qualification wherever you are in the world. For Module 1, the written exam can be taken either at our Birmingham centre or at a Cambridge-approved centre in your own country.

Who is Delta for?

Delta is not an entry-level course. It’s designed for:

  • Teachers with at least one year of post-CELTA classroom experience (often more).

  • Teachers who want to strengthen their theoretical knowledge and refine their practice.

  • Teachers looking to move up into academic management, teacher training, or curriculum development.

If you’re not sure whether you’re ready, you can book a call with us to see if you should build more experience first.
